South Florida Beach Engagement Photoshoot Guide: Sunrise Session on the Coast

There’s something special about South Florida beaches in the early morning. The quiet shoreline, the soft sunrise light, and the way the ocean creates a natural backdrop make it one of our favorite places to capture love stories.

Recently, I (Tatiana) had the opportunity to photograph a sunrise beach engagement session with my amazing friend Amaly, who has been a photographer for quite a while now. Getting to second shoot alongside her was such a fun experience — especially because her photography journey has a little story of its own.

Funny enough, I actually gave Amaly my old camera gear when she was starting her photography business… but there was one condition: she had to post her work on her business Instagram account. And honestly? The rest is history.

Watching her grow as a photographer and getting to create alongside her was such a gift from God - truly full circle.

For this South Florida beach engagement session, we met Jess and Nick — the sweetest couple who were so excited to celebrate their engagement and prepare for their destination wedding in Mexico. Their joy was contagious, and it made capturing their relationship feel effortless.

One of the best parts about beach photography is that you don't need a complicated setup. The beach itself gives you so much to work with — you just have to know how to use the environment.

Beach Engagement Photo Ideas

If you're planning your own South Florida beach photoshoot, here are some of our favorite prompts and ideas:

Walk (or run!) along the shoreline

Movement creates some of the most natural moments. Instead of standing still and posing the entire time, try walking together, running toward each other, or walking in opposite directions while staying connected.

These moments usually create the biggest laughs and the most genuine reactions.

Pick your partner up and spin them

Yes, it sounds cheesy — but trust us, it works.

Some of our favorite photos come from moments where couples are laughing, moving, and forgetting the camera is even there. A simple spin can create playful, romantic images that feel like you.

Let the environment be part of the story

The beach isn't just a background. Use the waves, sand, grass, and sunlight to create variety throughout your gallery.

For Jess and Nick's session, we moved through different areas of the beach to capture different moods — from playful moments by the water to quiet portraits surrounded by nature.

The Secret Ingredient: Sunrise Lighting

One of the biggest reasons we recommend sunrise beach sessions is the lighting.

Early morning sunlight is softer, warmer, and much more forgiving than harsh midday sun. It creates that dreamy glow that makes beach photos feel timeless and romantic.

We used the sunrise light to our advantage throughout the session, capturing beautiful backlighting, soft portraits, and those little in-between moments that make a gallery feel complete.

And Then Came the Birds...

This shoot was extra fun because we had some unexpected help from our "paid actors" — the birds.

(Okay, maybe they were paid in bread)

Using a little creativity, we were able to capture some fun shots with the birds flying around the couple. Sometimes the best photos come from embracing the unexpected and letting the moment unfold. Head to our Instagram to see the reel I made and you can also see me chucking bread at birds lol.

And I have to say — this session gave me what is probably my favorite image I've taken so far on my Minolta X700.

Ending the Session in the Grass

After spending time by the water, we moved over to the grassy area nearby and finished the session with some beautiful portraits.

These quieter moments are some of my favorites — sitting together, enjoying the morning, and capturing the connection between two people without needing a big production.

At the end of the day, the best beach photos aren't just about the location. They're about the people, the connection, and creating space for genuine moments to happen.
